Manchester United Vs. Liverpool: Steven Gerrard Red Carded For Challenge On Michael Carrick

Stay connected with SB Nation

Bad has turned to worse for Liverpool and Kenny Dalglish as the game's 32nd minute witnessed Steven Gerrard sent off for a heavy challenge on Michael Carrick. Was the straight red deserved? Yes.

In a game that's turned into quite the cagey affair, Liverpool have enjoyed meaningful possession as they pursue an equalizer yet Fernando Torres has lacked sharpness up front and the majority of Liverpool's forward movements have fallen apart in the final third. The tie truly has turned into the type of heavyweight fight football fans are used to when two big clubs face each other. But back to Steven Gerrard.

As Gerrard and Carrick both went in for a 50/50 ball, it was Gerrard, slightly behind Carrick, who left his feet and lunged two footed into Carrick who had reached the ball first. Howard Webb brandished the red with little thought or hesitation while Liverpool's traveling support rued their luck. Now down to ten men and still and goal down, serious questions are being asked concerning Liverpool's abilities to make their mark on the match with a full 45 still left to play.
