The field for UEFA Euro 2012 is almost set with 12 of the 16 teams for next summer's tournament in Poland and Ukraine having already booked their places. Eight others are still battling for a place and will play in two-legged playoffs on November 11/12 and 15 to fill out the field prior to the final draw on December 2. When all is said and done, the teams will be split into four pots of four each with one team from each pot being put into each of the for groups of the tournament.
Pot 1 is already set with the hosts, Poland and Ukraine, being joined by the defending champions, Spain, and the next highest team ranked in the UEFA coefficient, Netherlands. So we know Pot 1, but what about the rest of the pots and what juicy match ups await us?
Pot 2 will have Germany, Italy and England for sure. Russia will likely also be in Pot 2, but Croatia are on their heels and can conceivably jump Russia with a couple wins in their playoff versus Turkey.
Trying to figure out the final two pots is nearly impossible because of all the variables with the playoffs so let's just take a look at where the rest of the teams are ranked in the coefficient, minus the four locked into Pot 1 and three locked into Pot 2.
Qualified teams: Russia (6),Greece (8), Sweden (9), Denmark (10), France (12)
Playoff teams: Croatia (7), Portugal (11), Ireland (13), Czech Republic (15), Turkey (18), Bosnia and Herzegovina (19), Montenegro (35), Estonia (37)
So looking at this, we could see a group of Spain, Germany, Croatia and France. We could also see Poland, Russia, Czech Republic and Estonia. Lovely, ain't it?
