Ralf Fährmann Injury Update: Torn MCL And Partially Torn ACL

Schalke has announced that the injury to goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann was worse than originally diagnosed. After the full diagnostic tests were completed on the left knee, they showed that the medial collateral ligament was completely torn and the anterior cruciate ligament was partially torn.

The decision now for Fährmann and the Schalke medical team will be whether the goalkeeper faces surgery or a more conservative treatment. Sporting director Horst Heldt is quoted by Bild as saying that they expect Fährmann to be out for "three months".

Heldt has declined to refute the rumors that the club are currently trying to bring former Stuttgart goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand in as a replacement. Hildebrand played at Stuttgart from 1999 through 2007, and he was a teammate of Heldt's from 2002 to 2006.

Lars Unnerstall started Schalke's Europa League game against AEK Larnaca on Thursday where he was forced to make two saves in a comfortable 5-0 victory for the club. Unnerstall is expected to remain in his regular reserve role if the signing of Hildebrand is made official.
