Edson Buddle Replaces Injured Landon Donovan On USMNT Roster

Landon Donovan will have to miss the United States' upcoming friendlies against Honduras and Ecuador because of a right quadriceps injury. The USA's all-time leading scorer will be replaced on the roster by Edson Buddle, his former LA Galaxy teammate that is now with FC Ingolstadt in the 2.Bundesliga and was on last summer's World Cup team. Buddle was also named to head coach Jurgen Klinsmann's first U.S. team for the Yanks' match against Mexico in August, but he was left off of the team for the team's two friendlies last month.

Donovan's strained quadriceps will be a blow to Klinsmann's plans of rebuilding the U.S. team. He is beginning to run short on matches to change and prepare his team before World Cup qualifying and losing one of the team's best player, even if only for two matches, is a bit of a setback. With his missing the match and Mikkel Diskerud, Alejandro Bedoya and Feeddy Adu being left off the team, Klinsmann won't have many attack-minded midfield options available for the two friendlies.

USMNT Releases Roster For Upcoming October Friendlies

Jurgen Klinsmann has called in the 22 players that will represent the United States in two upcoming October friendlies against Ecuador and Honduras. The U.S. first hosts Honduras on Oct. 8 at Sun Life Stadium in Miami. Three days later, the U.S. makes its first appearance at the New York Red Bull's home, Red Bull Arena when they entertain Ecuador.

Of the 22 players called in were nine MLS players including FC Dallas' Brek Shea and Sporting Kansas City's Teal Bunbury

There are a couple newcomers like Hoffenheim's Danny Williams, Real Salt Lake's Nick Rimando and Sporting Lisbon's Oguchi Onyewu. All three are being called up for the first time by Klinsmann. Still no Omar Gonzalez, Herculez Gomez or Mixx Diskerud getting a callup by Klinsmann however.

"We would like to continue seeing our players develop through these initial couple of months," said Klinsmann. "One important thing is to see continuity in the build-up of our national team and also in the way we work as coaches. We'd like to see new faces as well, but we also don't want to shake up the core structure of the team too much. The two results with Costa Rica and Belgium didn't work in our favor but we saw clearly that the team started to understand what we demand from them in terms of pace, playing style and how to play. We are definitely on the right path, and what we now need to focus on in this get together is the eagerness to finish things off up front."
