It was bad enough for Estonia when Andrei Stepanov was sent off in the first half for a second bookable offense. But the home side managed to hang on, often making it difficult to determine which side, exactly, had a man advantage. Then came two goals from Ireland in quick succession, one from Jonathan Walters, one from Robbie Keane.
Then things went from bad to worse for Estonia. Raio Piiroja, already on a yellow card, stuck out his hand most egregiously, and the referee had little choice but to call it, bringing Estonia down to nine men. All of Ireland breathed a sigh of relief as flashbacks of Paris were quickly pushed away.
