The top leagues in each country may have had the weekend off for international matches, but the lower divisions kept right on playing, with Serie B doing its best to fill the yawning gap left in the hearts of Serie A fans. Italy's second division usually provides great fun, when one measures fun in the number of goals scored, but this week only Grosseto - Varese provided an excessive amount of goals, with the visitors leaving Tuscany the 5-1 victors.
The win puts Varese even on points with Sampdoria, although the Leopardi are handling it much better than Samp, who, despite putting in their best efforts last season to get themselves relegated, are anxious to climb back up to Serie A. Will Beppe Iachini be the one to lift them up?
Bari had the lead on league leaders Torino going into halftime, but a goal by Mirko Antenucci shortly after the break left i Galletti with just one point from their visit to Turin. Torino are joined up top by Sassuolo and Pescara up top, but Padova are closing in, having picked up a draw with the Dolphins on Sunday. Meanwhile, Ascoli picked up their first win of the season at Brescia via a goal by Vito Falconieri, but remain bottom of the table, 8 points behind Nocerina, who fell to Reggina.
