Paraguay were much better in the second half than they were in the first, but ultimately they were unable to find a goal to overturn Chile's halftime lead. Uncharacteristically, the Chileans looked to hold onto a 1-0 lead as opposed to their usual style of unrelenting attack. The visitors came close on a couple of occasions, but substitute Matias Campos put the dagger in Paraguay in the 85th minute, scoring a goal to give his team a victory in their CONMEBOL World Cup 2014 qualifier by a final score of 2-0.
Pablo Contreras scored the opener 27 minutes in, heading in a corner kick by Matias Fernandez. He launched himself over a Paraguay defender and perhaps committed a foul, but the marking was much more to blame for the goal than the referee. The teams went into halftime with the score locked up at 1-0 after Paraguay failed to do much of anything.
Hernan Perez replaced Carlos Bonet for Paraguay at halftime in an attacking move. The visitors looked better with Perez in the team, but still failed to create any clear-cut scoring opportunities. Eventually, as they pushed more men forward, they were undone on the counter. Mauricio Isla, who had a brilliant game at his normal right wingback position, set up the goal with a great run and a ball back across the box for Campos. His shot from the top of the box took a wild deflection that made his shot unstoppable for Diego Barreto, and the ball flew past him into the net to seal the win for Chile.
