Manchester United are on top of Group C of the UEFA Champions League and control their own destiny, but they've made things a bit tougher than they would have liked. Benfica came to Old Trafford and snatched a 2-2 draw on Tuesday, meaning that United will have to get a result in Basel on the final matchday. FC Basel defeated Otelul Galati today, meaning they sit just one point behind both Benfica and United.
Benfica took the lead early, just three minutes into the match. While trying to defend a cross, Patrice Evra could only slightly deflect a ball as it sailed into the box. Phil Jones attempted to clear the ball, but failed miserably, poking the ball into his own net in the 3rd minute.
United would score the next two goals. Dimitar Berbatov netted the equalizer on the 30th minute, nodding in a cross. He was offside on the goal, but there's a good chance that Sir Alex Ferguson won't mind. The two sides went into halftime locked up at 1-1, but United came out the much more lively side in the second half.
Their play finally paid off with a go-ahead goal via Darren Fletcher in the 59th minute, but United couldn't hold the lead. Thanks to some absolutely terrible defending, the Red Devils allowed Benfica to simply walk through their defense to claim the equalizer, with Pablo Aimar applying the finish to get through to the next round.
Both Benfica and United are in a situation where they are through with a draw in the next round, but are in danger of going out if they lose.
