Neither Olympique Lyonnais nor Ajax will feel as if Tuesday's result in UEFA Champions League action was fair after both sides had plenty of opportunities to grab a winner, but Ajax are more than happy with the 0-0 draw. That's because the draw essentially guarantees them passage to the knockout stages of the competition with a three point lead on Lyon for second place, a seven goal advantage in goal difference and just one match day left.
Ajax had the first chance of the match, but Jan Vertonghen headed his chance over the bar. On the other side, Lisandro Lopez had several chances for Lyon, but he missed the net a couple times and was denied by Kenneth Vermeer when he did find the frame. Hugo Loris was challenged a couple times too and he was up to the task, but it was Vermeer who stole the spotlight with two incredible saves late on to secure the draw.
There is almost no chance of Lyon advancing to the knockout stages now, ending a remarkable run that has seem them advance from the group stage of the competition in every year since 2002-2003. Meanwhile, Ajax are into their first Champions League knockout stage since 2005-2006.
