LDU Quito and Universidad de Chile are well on their way to a Copa Sudamericana final, thanks to their performances this week in the first legs of the Copa Sudamericana semifinals. LDU Quito defeated Velez Sarsfield 2-0 at home to put the Argentinian champions under serious pressure, while La U grabbed a 1-1 road draw to give themselves a serious advantage as the series heads to Chile.
Vasco and La U played a relatively even game in the first 30 minutes, with the home side perhaps having the upper hand. Bernardo's 32nd minute goal came on the counter, with the Brazilian providing a fantastic powerful finish from 15 yards. However, the assist was extremely lucky, with Allan's pass taking a massive deflection as the ball magically fell right into Bernardo's path.
From that point forward, Vasco attempted to sit on their lead and La U had much more of the ball. They eventually got an equalizer, though it was on a set piece and not through one of their very good open play moves. Osvaldo González scored the goal with a stunning header, with Chilean international Eduardo Vargas providing the assist with a free kick.
In LDU Quito's victory, red-hot striker Hernan Barcos netted both goals. He's among the leading scorers in Ecuador with 16 goals in the domestic league this season. Barcos now has six goals in the competition, which puts him just one behind La U's Vargas, who has scored seven times in Copa Sudamericana.
