Players who are at least 23 years old with three years of experience and had options declined are eligible for the Re-Entry process.
Houston Dynamo defender Bobby Boswell and San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Bobby Convey are probably the two most interesting names who will be available in 2011 MLS Re-Entry Draft. Stage 1 of the draft will be held on Dec. 5, with Stage 2 coming a week later.
The list of available players was announced on Wednesday, and it's noticeably lacking big-name players. It is worth noting players must be at least 23 years old with three years of MLS experience to be eligible for the Re-Entry Draft, so even though someone like Columbus Crew Designated Player Andres Mendoza had his option declined, he was not eligible. Players who are at least 25 with four years of experience can enter this draft if they are out of contract, as opposed to having their option declined.
That said, it's particularly surprising to see Boswell on this list. Although he was probably due a raise on his reported 2011 salary of $210,000, the Dynamo protected him in last week's Expansion Draft. It's notable mainly because Boswell was protected over Brian Ching, whose selection set off a cacophony of complaints from the Dynamo and their fans. The 28-year-old center back also enjoyed a career year last year and scored five goals, while making 29 starts. He has made at least 26 starts in all but one of his seven MLS seasons. It's possible that the Dynamo now plan to trade Boswell to the Montreal Impact or anywhere else by Friday, but this would seem to limit their negotiating abilities.
Convey's inclusion is far less surprising. The midfielder and sometimes left back has been at odds with Earthquakes management for some time and his departure was essentially announced awhile back. Considering he made well over $300,000 last year and is probably due a raise, it's unlikely that he'll be selected in Stage 1 of this draft, but could be picked in Stage 2 when teams are able to renegotiate contracts of players they've picked. Convey is just one year removed from his Comeback Player of the Year performance in 2010 when he helped lead the Earthquakes to their first playoff appearance since returning to the league in 2008.
Other somewhat notable players to be eligible in this draft include Jeff Cunningham, Joe Cannon, Maicon Santos, Santino Quaranta, Jean Alexandre, Bouna Condoul, Arturo Alvarez, Andy Williams.
