Italian Serie A 2011, Week 10 Preview And Schedule: Sometimes Calcio Takes A Backseat

Sunday in Serie A features a few potentially great matches, including Udinese - Siena, Milan - Catania, and Napoli - Juventus. Considering the depressing news from Italy this week, football will be a welcome respite.

Despite there being a few interesting fixtures on the schedule for Serie A, week ten, it's difficult to concentrate solely on calcio this weekend. The week began with the news of Antonio Cassano hospitalized with a mystery illness, believed to be a stroke based on his symptoms. In fact, the Milan forward had suffered an ischemic attack brought on by a slight perforation in his heart, which required surgery. The positive news is that his heart surgery was successful; the bad that Cassano will likely miss six months of play.

In other depressing news, Inter's trip to Genoa has been cancelled due to massive flooding in Liguria. The storms, coming just a week after ten were killed in the same area due to floods, have drowned out the streets of Genoa, with at least seven dead thus far.

And so football seems to take a backseat to huge issues involving the frailty of human life. Then again, sport often used as a distraction from the harsh realities of the world, so why not tune in? Palermo take on Bologna as the rosanero seek to steady their constantly rocking ship. Novara aim to pull themselves out of the relegation zone, but hosting Roma, who are still smarting from last week's loss against Milan, probably won't be the best way to do that.

Sunday is when the real action commences, however. Siena travel to Udinese, where they'll likely focus simply on keeping the zebrette out rather than testing Samir Handanovic. Milan hope to keep Catania from recording their first away win, but gli elefanti have lost just once on the road. Finally, the weekend ends with Napoli hosting Juventus in a match voted most likely to make SB Nation's Italy editor cry into her whisky glass.
