Liverpool will be without arguably their best player for the rest of the season. Brazilian international Lucas has torn his ACL and will have season-ending surgery.

Liverpool defensive midfielder and Brazilian international Lucas Leiva has been ruled out for the rest of the Premier League season, LFC announced via their official club website on Thursday. Lucas injured his knee during a challenge in Liverpool's Carling Cup quarterfinal match against Chelsea. He left the game with a large gash on his knee, but it was unclear whether his injury was just a gash or something more serious at the time. Now, Liverpool are without arguably their best player.

Lucas has been in stellar form for Liverpool and was putting in a man of the match performance against Chelsea before he was substituted out. The Reds are also missing Steven Gerrard until January, meaning a team once thought to be deep in midfield is now incredibly thin.

Rumors of Lucas's injury status began to swirl on Wednesday after young midfielder Jonjo Shelvey was recalled from a loan with Blackpool. Lucas was taken in for a scan today and the worst was confirmed. He'll have season ending surgery, and John Henry might be opening up his checkbook in January once again.
