Real Madrid Vs. Barcelona, 2011 El Clasico: Karim Benzema Curls Wide

Stay connected with SB Nation

Well there was Real Madrid's chance to get back in it. Karim Benzema, who opened the scoring with a goal that now seems a lifetime ago, receives possession on the left and is able to beat Gerard Pique and drive through the area. Gonzalo Higuain is lurking at the far post for a tap-in, but instead of passing the French striker shoots, curling well wide as his teammate attempts a desperate lunch to turn it in. Not good play there.

By my count, that's three fantastic chances for Real Madrid to score that they've wasted, which is probably more chances than their opponents have generated all match. When you're that wasteful in front of goal, you can't expect results, and it looks like some silly decisions and poor finishing are going to cost them dear against Barcelona. It's still 3-1 in the Catalans' favour with just over ten minutes to go.
