The rumors have been swirling for weeks that transfer listed striker Nicolas Anelka would be moving from Chelsea to Chinese side Shanghai Shenhua FC in the January transfer window, but that news is now confirmed. Both the official websites of Shanghai Shenhua and Chelsea announced on Monday morning that Anelka would be leaving London for Shanghai to join the Blue Devil on a two-year contract.
Since joining Chelsea from Bolton Wanderers in 2008, Anelka has scored 39 goals in 125 league appearances for the Blues. He scored 19 league goals in his second season with Chelsea, the 2008-09 Premier League campaign, and netted seven times in nine European matches last season.
Shanghai Shenhua are almost certainly making this move more for commercial purposes than footballing purposes, though they need some help on the pitch. They finished in 11th place in the most recent Chinese Super League season, only 10 points off the drop zone and 13 points from an Asian Champions League place.
