Positive Stadium News from Houston Dynamo and San Jose Earthquakes

It has been a good 24 hours for the further development of Major League Soccer on the stadium front. On Tuesday evening, news broke that the Houston Dynamo agreed to a 10-year, $20 million naming rights deal with BBVA Compass. Wednesday morning, the San Jose Earthquakes reached an important milestone toward their stadium project becoming a reality.

The Dynamo will hold an event at their new stadium site on Wednesday to announce the team's new home will be called BBVA Compass Stadium for the next 10 years. The deal is on par with recent naming deals in Philadelphia (PPL Park) and Salt Lake City (Rio Tinto Stadium) and will bring $2 million per year for the next decade to the Dynamo. Combined with their new shirt sponsorship deal signed last off-season, the Dynamo's future in Houston looks secured both in terms of facilities and revenue.

Admittedly it's not the most exciting name ever, but it does lend itself to some potentially fun nickname possibilities. BBVA Compass Stadium is scheduled to open on Saturday, May 12th, 2012.

Meanwhile in the Dynamo's previous home, the newest version of the Earthquakes took a huge step forward in their attempts to get a new stadium built. Robert Jonas from Quake, Rattle and Roll, is reporting the city of San Jose's planning director have given consent to the Earthquakes' proposed new stadium planned development permit.

While this news doesn't mean there will be shovels in the ground tomorrow, it is a major hurdle that the team needed to get past in order to get their much needed soccer specific stadium constructed. Baring any major issues, it's looking very good for the Earthquakes being able to finally move out of Buck Shaw Stadium sooner rather than later.

Now we just need to the District of Columbia to come to their senses.
