2012 MLS SuperDraft: Five Players Signed To Generation Adidas Contracts

Andrew Wegner, Darren Mattocks, Sam Garza, Kelyn Rowe and Chandler Hoffman all named to 2012 Generation Adidas class.

The 2012 MLS SuperDraft continued to take shape on Thursday with the league announcing the first five players to be named to the Generation Adidas class, as well as four seniors who have already signed contracts. Headlining the group are presumptive top picks Andrew Wegner and Darren Mattocks. Sam Garza (UC Santa Barbara), Kelyn Rowe (UCLA) and Chandler Hoffman (UCLA) were the other underclassmen to sign. Seniors Tony Cascio (UConn), Nick DeLeon (Louisville), Luis Silva (UCSB) and Casey Townsend (Maryland) also signed MLS contracts. As it stands now, this would be the first Generation Adidas class not to include a teenager, although that can definitely change prior to the Jan. 12 SuperDraft.

Mattocks is pretty much a pure forward, who scored 39 goals in 47 games at Akron. He will likely play for Jamaica's U-23 team during Olympic qualifying and had been rumored to be looking at offers in Europe before signing with MLS.

Wegner is much more versatile. After spending most of his first two seasons at center back, he shifted to forward this year and responded by scoring 17 goals and winning the ACC Offensive Player of the Year. Most seem to think he'll play on the defensive side in MLS, though.

Interestingly enough, none of these nine players are exclusively defenders. Garza, Hoffman and Townsend are all forwards, with each scoring at least 17 goals. Rowe, DeLeon and Silva are all offensively-minded midfielders. Rowe had six goals and 10 assists; DeLeon had six goals and six assists; and Silva had 17 goals and 10 assists.
