The derby match between Galatasaray and Fenerbahce is one of the most heated in world football, if not the hottest. Turkey's two biggest clubs, both located in Istanbul -- Fener on the Asian side of the Bosphorus, Gala on the European side -- have been meeting for over 100 years, but familiarity sure hasn't bred contempt, not in this case. While the derby might be known for slightly more sinister acts, such as fans breaking seats, setting off fireworks, and causing injuries, Gala - Fener really does showcase the passion of the supporters:
That's the titfo from the last time the two clubs met at the Türk Telekom Arena, the cim bom's new stadium -- this, back when Galatasaray were trailing Fenerbahce by, well, a lot of points. It's a bit different this time around.
This year brings even greater tensions to the Istanbul Derby. The Yellow Canaries lead the Super Lig by just three points -- a win for Gala means the two teams will be tied at the top of the table. Galatasaray haven't won the league since 2008, finishing 7th last season, while their rivals took the title -- amidst accusations of match-fixing, which saw Fenerbahce replaced by Trabzonspor in the Champions League.
While Fenerbahce might have been flying high in the second half of last season, Galatasaray have certainly been revived this season, helped along by fresh new summer signings. The Yellow Canaries saw many exit during the hubbub over the scandal, narrowing the gap between the two and creating what's sure to be a wild atmosphere for the first derby of the season.
