Liverpool FC Vs. Wigan Athletic: Spoils Shared At Anfield

There was a bit of a Red tide towards the end of the match - Fabio Aurelio and Martin Skrtel both contrived to wing the ball over Ali Al-Habsi's crossbar when they might easily have scored, and full debutant Luis Suarez did them one better by clattering said crossbar with a delicious free kick. However, Wigan defended fairly manfully, throwing their bodies in the way of more or less everything (including Suarez, for which Gary Caldwell should probably have been sent off) and preventing the home side from adding to Raul Meireles's superb first half volley.

Despite being very much on the back foot for the end of the match, Wigan were still full value for their point, playing expansive entertaining football before being rewarded with an equaliser from the left boot of Steve Gohouri following an Antonin Alcarez flick-on of Charles N'Zogbia's tasty cross. Saying the goal looked a shade offside would be a rather gross understatement, but it was allowed to stand, and it ultimately earned Wigan a point and cost Kenny Dalglish's Liverpool two.
