Manchester City, Ireland Keeper Shay Given To Miss Three Months With Shoulder Injury

Manchester City goalkeeper Shay Given could miss up to three months with a shoulder injury. It's the same shoulder Given damaged last April against Arsenal, which required City to appeal to the FA for permission to sign emergency backup keeper Marton Fulop from Sunderland. This season, news that Given is out for what is likely the rest of the season isn't met with such alarm. Joe Hart is back from his loan spell at Birmingham City and not only displaced given in the City pecking order, but also established himself as the first choice goalkeeper for England. Roberto Mancini won't be losing too much sleep over Given's injury.

The Republic of Ireland, however, is likely to be fretting a bit over this news. Just a bit, though, as The Boys In Green have just one Euro qualifier in those three months, against Macedonia March 26. Coventry City keeper Keiren Westwood will fill in, playing in his first competitive game for Ireland.

(PS: A twitter poll determined that Stephen Ireland's grandmother would be playing for Ireland, which is why it's best to not rely on social media when relaying the news).
