There's Dark Monday, Cyber Monday - a host of names to describe significant Mondays. Given what the soccer world sees the Monday before every international break, we come up with a name for the day where the world's talent find a myriad of spurious excuses for rejecting their national team's call-ups.
We've already heard from England, who will be without Steven Gerrard, Gabriel Agbonlahor, Ben Foster and Peter Crouch. Now SB Nation's Arsenal FC blog, The Short Fuse, updates us on the Gunners' list of excuses, reasons forcing the withdrawal of five players from various teams:
According to the site, van Persie is suffering from flu. Cesc Fabregas is ill as well, suffering from gastroenteritis according to the Guardian. Arsenal supporters will recall that Tomas Rosicky had the flu as well a couple of weeks ago; if the illness is spreading in the changing room, there could be problems for the team. The website was not clear about why Gibbs and Ramsey withdrew from England U-21s and Wales, respectively. Djourou was injured in the match against Newcastle on Saturday and is out for an as-yet undisclosed period of time
The Fuse's Ted Harwood gives more details (and sources) on the ins and outs for Arsenal's international footballing week. For that as well as everything else Arsenal, visit The Short Fuse, SB Nation's Arsenal FC community blog.
