Liverpool Vs. Manchester United: Nani Injury Forces Change In United's Deployment At Start Of Second Half

Stay connected with SB Nation

At the end of the first half we noted Javier Hernández came on for Nani (video, images of Nani's injury). The move was forced by Nani's injury, with injuries at the win position forcing Alex Ferguson to bring on a striker. While the Manchester United manager has Gabriel Obertan on the bench, it doesn't seem the young Frenchman is trusted enough to effect a result while United's down two.

As a result, Chicharito is partnering Dimitar Berbatov up top. Wayne Rooney has moved wide left. Ryan Giggs is playing on the right, giving Ferguson two inverted wingers.

In the early part of the second half, having two players who can cut-in onto their strong foot appears to have some potential. We've seen Giggs and Rooney willing to come in an augment the passing game a little more than we saw Nani and Giggs do when they were on their natural sides.

But it has only been a few minutes, and in the 49th, we had a reminder that Liverpool has been the better side. The Reds got through United's left, and Raul Meireles was able to play a ball into the six. Edwin van der Sar covered it up and quickly sprung United on a counter that led to a Hernández chance from Berbatov, wide right.

But now in the 50th minute, we're still yet to see what this second half will be about. Liverpool still has their two goal lead.
