PHOTO: Nani Suffers Leg Gash During Liverpool-Manchester United At The Boots Of Jamie Carragher

Originally it seemed like Nani was making too much out of Jamie Carragher's late first half challenge, a red card-worthy "tackle" that sparked confrontation new the end of the North West Derby's first half. Now, photos making their way around the internet, courtesy of the Sun and sent to the world via TwitPic, show how remarkable it is that Carragher was allowed to stay in the game.

More after the jump, but warning: There will be blood.

This second image is so rough that I can't think of a good way to warn you. While I did caution, there would be blood, I didn't prepare you for this:

I'm keeping that image, one that 's making the rounds online, small for a reason. Click on it to see a full version, but warning: Stitches were clearly going to be required.

For those who missed the play, Jamie Carragher went high, through and left leg outstretched into Nani, the Manchester United winger standing above the ball at the left sideline. Phil Dowd judged it a yellow card offense, and while Nani initially appeared healthy - jumping up to appeal to the official - he collapsed moments later in what was thought to be theatrics.

Perhaps Nani was acting when he went to ground a second time, but looking at the picture, it's clear the guy was hurt. He was practically bludgeoned. So, apologies, Nani, for my incredulity.

Liverpool went on to win the match 3-1, but all anybody wants to talk about afterward is Nani and Carragher.

From Carragher’s autobiography:

When my leg was broken in an horrific tackle by Lucas Neill in September 2003, my mates were ready to hunt him down if I gave the go-ahead.

A few weeks later I received a phone call. “You won’t believe this, Jay. We’re in the Trafford Centre and Lucas Neill is walking straight towards us. What do you reckon?”

Did I really want Neill to take a crack? “There’s only one problem,” added the voice. “Little Davey Thommo is with him.”

That was that. I could hardly let one of my best mates, David Thompson, now a Blackburn player, become a witness to an assault. Besides he’d have recognised the attackers. The impromptu mission was aborted and I sent a text to Thommo telling him Neill should give him a hug of thanks.

As word got back to Blackburn about the near miss, or should that be hit, their coach Terry Darracott, a Scouser, appealed to one of my friends to call the boys off. I agreed.

Hope the talentless prick has all his mates around him in the coming weeks.

If I am good I could add years to my life / I would rather add some life to my years.
