UnitedHealthcare (Yep, All One Word), New England Revolution Agree On Shirt Sponsorhip Deal

The New England Revolution have officially joined the MLS shirt-sponsor club, as they have just announced an agreement with UnitedHealthcare that will mark the first time a company's name will replace the team name on the jersey. There are now 13 MLS teams with the name of a corporate sponsor on their shirts. Other deals are worth anywhere from $1 million-$5 million. MLS has set a floor of $500,000 a year from shirts sponsors and the league shares $200,000 of that amount.

"There is no more significant brand placement in sports than across the chest of an athlete and we’re proud that UnitedHealthcare has chosen to partner with the Revolution in this way," New England Revolution Investor/Operator Jonathan A. Kraft said in a statement. "We believe UnitedHealthcare’s innovative approach to promoting youth fitness and wellness, coupled with the platform of our team and Major League Soccer’s national footprint, will make a significant, positive impact in New England and across the country. Raising awareness - especially among children - of the importance of living a healthy life starting at a young age is imperative, and we’re pleased to be part of UnitedHealthcare’s efforts."

This leaves the Colorado Rapids, Sporting Kansas City and FC Dallas as the only MLS teams to have never had a shirt sponsor. The Columbus Crew and Chicago Fire had sponsorship deals end this offseason and are also without shirt deals.
