Branko Boskovic, DC United's Designated Player, Undergoes ACL Surgery, Out At Least Six Months

Branko Boskovic, DC United's Designated Player, underwent successful ACL surgery on Monday and will be out at least six months. The surgery likely means he'll be out for the rest of the 2011 season and could mean he has played his final game in Black and Red. Boskovic had not been starting during MLS play and it's unclear how much interest United would have in bringing him back.

"We are pleased that Branko has undergone successful surgery, and we expect him to make a full recovery over the coming months," DC United General Manager Dave Kasper said in a team statement.

Boskovic suffered the injury during a U.S. Open Cup qualifying match when he was tackled by a New England Revolution player. Although he had been relegated to the bench for much of this MLS season, he was just rounding into form and had scored two goals in the game in which he was injured. He is one of four high-profile MLS players to go down with potential season-ending injuries after questionable tackles.

Branko Boskovic, DC United's Designated Player, Has Torn ACL

Branko Boskovic finally looked like he was breaking through. In his last game, DC United's 3-2 loss to the New England Revolution during U.S. Open Cup qualifying, he scored two goals. That performance came on the heels of a match against the New York Red Bulls in which he hit the woodwork twice. After starting the season as a reserve player, they were clear positive signs. Unfortunately, an injury during that Revolution match turned out to be much more serious than originally believed and DC United announced on Friday that he has a torn ACL.

This likely means that Boskovic, who has never scored or registered an assist in 17 MLS matches, is out for at least several months and could, theoretically, spell the end of his MLS career. The Serbian had never quite lived up to his contract and it's not hard to imagine that this could be his last season with United.

Boskovic was hurt in the 82nd minute of the Revolution match on a challenge by Alan Kroger and did not return to the match despite United being out of substitutions. In comments after the game, Boskovic indicated that he did not thing there was a foul on the play, despite originally being concerned he may have broken his leg.
