AC Milan Confirm Deals For Mexes And Taiwo

AC Milan have confirmed the signings of Phillippe Mexes and Taye Taiwo for next season. The Serie A champions have long been linked to Mexes and the French central defender posted on his Twitter a month ago that he would join Milan, but now Milan manager Massimiliano Allegri has confirmed his signing on a free transfer from Roma. He also confirmed the signing of Taiwo on a free transfer from Olympique Marseille, giving the club another option at left back.

"In defense, Milan are sorted,'' Allegri said in a press conference on Monday. "We have taken Mexes and Taiwo.''

The Rossoneri had Seire A's best defense by a wide margin this season, having surrendered 23 goals so far en route to a title when the next closest team has allowed 36 goals. That isn't stopping them from bolstering their defense for next season though. With Mexes and Taiwo, they've strengthened themselves in the center and also on the left, although Taiwo has always been more of an attacking left back than a defending one.

With the confirmation that Mexes will leave for Milan next season, it mean that he has played his left match at Stadio Olimpico for Roma. The Frenchman had surgery to repair ligaments in his knee last month and has been ruled out for the season so the next time he puts on a shirt, it will be one of Milan's red and black. How he helps the Milan back line is a question mark though after a sub-par season for Roma prior to his injury.

For Taiwo, his departure will be a big hit for Marseille, even if his moving on is not a surprise. The Nigerian helped the club win Ligue 1 a year ago and has helped them to second place this season. Taiwo also scored the winning goal for Marseille to help them make the Coupe de France final last month, but next season he will be making the move to the San Siro. There, he will be ale to get forward and provide some width for a team whose lack of width was exploited by some of the better teams in the Champions League this season.

Philippe Mexes: I'm Going To AC Milan

With French centre half Phillipe Mexes out for the remainder of Roma's forgettable Serie A campaign, speculation has mounted as to whether or not the defender would be sticking around with the Giallorossi at all. He is, after all, out of contract come the summer, and there had been much speculation linking him with a move to AC Milan in the offseason. And now there's no more speculation:

Mexes a Villa Stuart: "Ho passato 7 anni bellissimi a Roma, a fine stagione vado al Milan"less than a minute ago via Seesmic for Android

According to our good friend Google Translate, that reads 'I spent 7 years in beautiful Rome, at the end of the season I go to AC Milan,' in English. That all seems pretty clear cut: Philippe Mexes has indeed pulled his last shirt and displayed his last ponytail in Roma colours after a seven year career which has seen him made 161 appearances for the club. According to UEFA rules, clubs are free to negotiate with players six months before their contract is due to expire, so it's entirely possible that Milan have already signed him. Anyway, Mexes didn't exactly leave Roma on a high, did he?

Philippe Mexes Likely Out For Rest Of Roma Season With Knee Injury

Philippe Mexes has possibly played his last match in an AS Roma kit. The defender suffered a knock during Roma's defeat to Juventus on Sunday, pulling up with pain in the first half before having to be removed in the second. Turns out that twinge was the feeling of ligaments tearing in his left knee (ewwww) and now Mexes will likely have to miss between four and five months. Given that it is now April and the season ends May 22, it seems as though only a miracle will put Mexes back on the pitch this season.

With rumors swirling about of his eminent departure to AC Milan, Mexes' injury could mean we've seen the last of him in a Giallorossi kit. The France international has been rather inconsistent for Roma this season, so this injury may be a bit of a mixed blessing for the club as they try to work their way up from sixth into the Champions League positions.
