Santos FC Appoint Muricy Ramalho As Their New Manager

Santos FC have been struggling mightily in both Copa Libertadores and the Sao Paulo State Championship this season, and with the departure of young superstars Neymar and Paulo Henrique Ganso imminent, they felt the need to act quickly to make the most of those players' talents while they are Santos players and push for silverware. As a result, they've brought in Muricy Ramalho as manager of the club on a short-term basis, signing him to a contract through the remainder of this calendar year.

Ramalho managed Fluminense to the Brasileiro title last season, but quit the job citing the club's poor training facilities and youth development structure as compared to similarly sized clubs. He also was offered the Brazil job after Dunga was fired, but depending on which media outlet you believe, he either turned down the job or was not allowed by Fluminense to interview for the job. Whether or not that was a factor in his quitting his previous job is unknown, but what is known is that he has the pedigree to get the most out of Santos's young stars.

Santos will be fighting for their life on Wednesday night in Copa Libertadores, and they must defeat Colo-Colo to stay alive. Additionally, they sit behind rivals Corinthians, Sao Paulo, and Palmeiras in the state championship. Play in the Brasileiro begins in the third week of May.
