I love seeing more clubs get creative here. First, Major League Soccer releases their MatchDay Live app for the iOS and Android platforms, now it appears more clubs are getting on board in making their own apps. The Seattle Sounders FC released one of their own recently. And today, their rivals to the south, the Portland Timbers released their own app, a game, called Timbers Axe.
The game itself is fairly basic, you draw a line like in the photo below to throw your axe. You have to take out all the "Flounders", yes Flounders, that come in your way. The object is to keep the Flounders from going into your rose garden.
I love seeing this kind of marketing by a club. It is different, fresh, and unique. Sure most clubs can't do something like this due to resources, money, and personnel available to them. I don't think all clubs could get away with something like this either. Can you imagine the Chicago Fire putting an iPhone game out right now? Probably not. Nothing against the Fire here but they are a club that comes to mind that doesn't have a strong enough rival to do something like what the Timbers did here.
For more information on the game, be sure to check out Stumptown Footy.
