Jose De Jesus Corona Removed From Mexico's Roster, Replaced By Jonathan Orozco

Goalkeeper Jose De Jesus Corona has been removed from Mexico's 23-man Gold Cup roster after being involved in a fight during Sunday's the Cruz Azul-Monarcas Morelia Liguilla match. He has been replaced by Monterrey's Jonathan Orozco. FMF State of Mind, SB Nation's Mexican soccer blog, had speculated that Chivas goalkeeper Luis Michel would be the next keeper in line for the call-up:

We asked earlier who should replace Corona in the national team squad, and the response was overwhelming in favor of Chivas Guadalajara's Luis Michel, who did not get the call-up. Michel has been brilliant lately for Chivas and is generally considered to be above Orozco in the pecking order for the national team's No. 1 shirt, so it's safe to assume that Michel was not called up because El Tri want to start him in Copa America. In Gold Cup, he would have simply been Guillermo Ochoa's backup.

Orozco helped lead Monterrey to the CONCACAF Champions League championship.

Mexico Names 23-Man Roster For CONCACAF Gold Cup

The Mexican Football Federation announced their 23-man final roster for the CONCACAF Gold Cup and the headlines are in who is not on the roster, rather than who is on it. Even so, the team is full of players that undoubtedly make them one of the favorites to win the tournament. Javier 'Chichario' Hernandez is in the midst of a blinding first season with Manchester United, while Gerardo Torrado is a steadying force in the midfield and Andres Guardado looks to be closing in on full fitness.

Carlos Vela's free fall from budding superstar to also-ran continues as he is left off the squad, although it is easy to forget that is still just 22 years old. Jonathan dos Santos has also been left off the squad, but he is expected to be in Mexico's team for Copa America. Jonny Magallon was omitted as he continues to battle injury, while Jonathan Orozco was passed over despite excellent form of late.

The Mexican team will begin training for the Gold Cup on May 15. They will play a friendly against Ecuador in Seattle, WA on May 28 and then against New Zealand in Denver, CO on June 1 in preparation for the tournament. Mexico are in Group A of the Gold Cup along with Costa Rica, El Salvador and Cuba. They open play on June 5 against El Salvador at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, TX and along with the United States, are favorites to advance to the final at the Rose Bowl on June 25.
