It was fairly common knowledge that Manchester United would be making an attempt to sign Atletico Madrid goalkeeper David de Gea, but this is the first time we've heard anything from the club. Sir Alex Ferguson himself has confirmed that United have agreed a deal with Atletico to buy de Gea:
We've been working on [the de Gea deal] for quite a while. We identified him quite a while back as one we should go for. He's a young goalkeeper, very quick, good composure, presence and an outstanding replacement for van der Sar.
We were looking for the same type of qualities as Edwin, because the one great quality Edwin always had was his composure and organisational ability. With David De Gea, he is very similar that way.
De Gea is still very young - he's just 20 years old - and he has his flaws, but few doubt he could emerge as a top goalkeeper before too long. In replacing Edwin van der Sar he has big shoes to fill, and while he's not there he certainly has the talent to someday replace the big Dutchman in United fans' hearts. The fee for de Gea is believed to be in the region of 20M Euros.
