UEFA Champions League Final 2011: Victor Valdes To Wear No. 92, Not No. 1?

Stay connected with SB Nation

Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes is changing numbers for the 2011 UEFA Champions League final at Wembley. The stopper, who normally wears No. 1, is apparently changing his number for the match against Manchester United. What to and why?

in 1992, which isn't really all that long ago, Barcelona won their first ever European Cup, defeating Sampdoria in extra time at Wembley thanks to a free kick goal from Ronald Koeman. Since, Barcelona have been a dominant European force, but before that match they could have been regarded as chronic underachievers. 1992 marks the turning point for the club (in terms of success at the biggest stage, at any rate), and Valdes is apparently wearing 92 on his jersey to commemorate that famous win. Prediction: Manchester United and some neutral fans will claim that this is annoying for absolutely no good reason.
