The amazing comeback of Barcelona's Eric Abidal just continues to get more amazing. Widely regarded as one of the finest and most versatile defenders in the world, Abidal was given some of the world news anyone could hear when he was told that he had a tumor on his liver. He quickly went into surgery to have the tumor removed and ever since, the Frenchman has just made a mockery of the recovery process with a stunningly fantastic comeback.
Abidal was diagnosed with a tumor just back on March 15. Doctors had wanted to wait a week before surgery to have the tumor removed, but Abidal insisted it be done right away. By May 3, a mere 49 days after being diagnosed with the tumor, Abidal was back on the pitch for Barcelona. On Friday, Abidal learned that he would make his return to the international game when Laurent Blanc named him to the France team for the team's upcoming Euro 2012 qualifier, but Saturday at Wembley Stadium may have topped it all.
In the world's biggest match of 2011, Abidal looked right at home. Starting at left back for Barcelona against Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League final, Abidal was strong from the beginning. He helped the Catalans to a dominating 3-1 win over the Red Devils to capture the biggest club title in the world. Abidal raised that Champions League trophy up the air in front of over 85,000 fans at Wembley Stadium, the high point in a comeback that continues to boggle the mind.
