Roberto Martinez Declines Aston Villa Job, Signs Extension With Wigan Athletic

Two days ago, Wigan Athletic gave manager Roberto Martinez permission to speak with Aston Villa about their vacant manager's role. Today, Martinez announced that he had turned down the position and that, instead, he was opting to sign a new three-year contract with his current employers to stay at his current position for the foreseeable future. Martinez has guided Wigan to Premier League safety on two occasions after guiding Swansea City, a team just promoted to the Premier League, into the Championship from League 1.

Martinez was a prominent player at Wigan back in his playing days, playing for the club from 1995 through 2001. He cited his long-standing relationship with the club and his gratitude for their role in his career as reasons he decided not to take the Aston Villa job.

Villa has now reportedly set their sites on Bolton Wanderers manager Owen Coyle as their next target for their vacant manager's position.
