Assessing Sporting Kansas City's Post-Ryan Smith Landscape - The Daily Wiz

Ryan Smith's absence will be felt by Sporting Kansas City, of that there is little doubt. The young left winger was a rising star, not just for Sporting, but for MLS.

Lucking for Sporting fans, there are some obvious replacements. The Daily Wiz goes over some of them:

  • Designated player and forward Omar Bravo will almost exclusively play on the left side of the attack, assuming Vermes sticks with some variation of his favored 4-3-3 formation. This also likely means no more Bravo as the "attacking midfielder", either.
  • With that, midfielders Graham Zusi and Milos Stojcev are probably the two to beat as attacking midfielder. Bravo's class is far superior, but he is likely unavailable here. So, Zusi probably plays a bit less as a forward now.

The other thing that probably works in Sporting's favor is the fact that Smith had not been a huge part of the team so far this year, anyway. He has missed seven of the team's 13 matches with various injuries and has only started twice, scoring one goal.

Ryan Smith Leaves Sporting Kansas City For 'Family Reasons'

Sporting Kansas City had just started to show signs of turning around their disastrous start, having won two straight and going unbeaten in their past five. On Tuesday, though, they took another setback as they learned that winger Ryan Smith would be leaving the team for the rest of the season due to "family reasons."

"It's never easy for international players who come to MLS when they have to live far away from their families. This situation is no different," Sporting Kansas City Manager Peter Vermes said in a team release. "With some of the family issues that Ryan has back at home, he felt like this was the best decision for both him and his family, and we support him."

Smith had only played in six of Sporting's 13 games so far while battling a variety of ailments, mostly in relation to offseason knee surgery. He had started twice and had one goal. Last year, he was one of the top contenders for top newcomer after scoring three goals and registering seven assists. He was expected to be a major part of Sporting's future as the 22-year-old showcased impressive skill.
