Costa Rica And Aalborg Defender Dennis Marshall Killed In Car Accident

Costa Rica defender Dennis Marshall was killed in a car accident in his home country on Thursday, the Red Cross confirmed. The accident occurred in a mountainous region 50 miles from the capital of San Jose that is treacherous to drivers because of rain and fog. Marshall's car collided head first into a truck and the woman who was also in the car with Marshall was also killed.

Marshall, who played for Aalborg in Denmark, has just recently returned to Costa Rica after playing for the national team in the Gold Cup where he scored a goal in the Ticos' quarterfinal loss to Honduras. The 25-year-old had been with Aalborg since 2009 and his goal against Honduras was his first for the Ticos in his 19th cap.

A Red Cross communications officer said that the accident was reported at 1:44 pm, but that by the time the ambulance had arrived both people were already dead.

Costa Rica is preparing for Copa America, which begins next month. They released the following statement in response to Marshall's passing.

"Todos estamos muy afectados, (el técnico de la selección) don Ricardo (La Volpe) también, es una noticia impactante. No sabemos cómo va a transcurrir el día de mañana, se les informó a los jugadores en el camerino y vamos a ver si se traslada todo el equipo para allá para el sepelio."

The rough English translation of that statement from the Costa Rican soccer federation is as follows:

"We are all affected, (the coach) Ricardo (La Volpe) also is shocking news. We do not know how you're going to run training tomorrow, they were told the players in the clubhouse and we'll see if the team moves there for burial."

Marshall will be buried in his hometown of Limon on the Caribbean coast of the country. No further details on the burial have been announced.
