Ricardo Osorio Leaves Mexico Team With Illness
Mexico defender Ricardo Osorio has left the team after their first Gold Cup match and returned to Monterrey where he will be treated for an illness, the Mexican Football Federation announced. Osorio had complained of pain in his urinary tract and has a family history of prostate cancer. Osorio had complained about the pain in training camp prior to the tournament, but was treated and returned to action with the team.
The 31-year-old was not named to the bench in Mexico's 5-0 win over El Salvador in the tournament opener on Sunday and he was not being counted on to make a huge impact for the team so his absence will not be a big issue for El Tri. They are set at the back without the former Stuttgart defender, currently with Monterrey, and remain the tournament favorites.
Osorio has 82 caps for El Tri and was a member of their past two World Cup teams so he has had a major role with the team in the past, but he's been passed up by younger players and has been relegated to a reserve role. Mexico will continue Gold Cup play on Thursday against Cuba in Charlotte, NC.
