Liverpool Sign Alexander Doni From AS Roma

The long awaited transfer of 31-year-old Brazilian international goalkeeper Alexander Doni to Liverpool has finally been completed. The former Roma number one has been hit with injuries and a lack of form recently, and the time had come to move on, and with Liverpool searching for a backup goalkeeper he was a natural fit. LFC director of football Damien Comolli commented on the fact that Liverpool's status meant that Doni was willing to back up Pepe Reina despite his wish to sign for a team where he'd be the first-choice netminder:

When you come here and know you will be a number two behind Pepe, what's important for us is the attitude and mentality off the pitch and in the changing room. He's got to be supportive of the number one but also be aggressive enough to push the number one on a daily basis, and I think Doni represents all that.

When we approached him the first time, obviously he wanted to be a number one somewhere, but he said Liverpool Football Club is such a big club that if he wanted to come as a number two then he would come.

If Doni can get his form back - he was a superb goalkeeper just a couple of seasons ago, Liverpool are in an excellent position. This move, if it pans out, could see them sell on Pepe Reina for a huge profit, and if it doesn't then they'll have secured a competent backup goalkeeper for very little money. the transfer fee was rumorued to be in the realm of £1M, so this is hardly a massive gamble.
