Two stoppage time goals assisted by goalkeeper errors have Peru through to the semifinals of Copa America

Peru, who has not qualified for a World Cup since 1982 is into their first Copa America semifinal since 1997. Not on the back of some great performances by Jefferson Farfan - he's injured. Claudio Pizarro? Him too. The hero? Substitute Carlos Lobaton, a 31-year-old attacking midfielder for Sporting Cristal. They haven't won the league in Peru since 2005 and they haven't competed in Copa Libertadores since 2009. He scored the game winner in extra time as Peru won by a final score of 2-0.
Fiorentina star and Peru's captain, Juan Manuel Vargas scored the second goal, restoring the game's outcome to something that has some basis in reality. Both goals were partially assisted by errors by Colombia goalkeeper Neco Martinez, who had a terrible game. The first goal came after a dropped cross by Martinez, and he was out of position on the second.
Peru now await the winner of the Argentina vs. Uruguay match, which kicks off at 6:15 PM E.T. For all of our Copa America coverage, check out our 2011 Copa America section.
After 90 minutes of fairly boring football, we will be subjected to another 30 minutes of what will probably be boring football. You can direct all of your hate mail towards Colombia and FC Porto superstar striker Radamel Falcao, who missed a penalty kick a good five yards wide in the second half. That penalty kick would have likely sent Peru home, Los Cafeteros to the semifinals, and this game to a merciful end. Instead, we will play 120 minutes.
The penalty was granted in the 65th minute when Alberto Martinez, who was having a brilliant game up until that point, hauled down Dayro Moreno - one of the few attacking players who had a good game - who was running onto a long ball from Mario Yepes. Falcao stepped up to take it, but he shanked his shot wide.
In the second minute of second half stoppage time, Fredy Guarin appeared to have a chance to end the game, but just like Falcao, he could not convert. Raul Fernandez made a solid save on his shot, tipping the ball up onto the crossbar and forcing extra time.

Colombia certainly have Peru beat in talent, but their play in the first half of their 2011 Copa America quarterfinal hasn't shown it. Though Los Cafeteros haven't looked terribly ambitious in the first half, this 45 minute segment might be in indication that Peru's defense throughout the group stage was not a fluke. The match is tied 0-0, and Peru deserve to be drawn with their opponents at this juncture. Both teams have been in a bit of a defensive shell, but Peru are looking more solid at the back and just as ambitious as their opponents.
Playmaker Fredy Guarin has been breaking down defenses for Colombia so far in this tournament, but Peru have impressively rendered him invisible so far. Radamel Falcao's work rate has been superb, but his teammates have not helped him much at all. This match is resembling Colombia's first two matches, in which Falcao ran all over the pitch but his work rate and skill was not matched.
Colombia has plenty of firepower on their bench, but it's all up top. What they really need is another passing midfielder, and they don't really have a great one other than Guarin. Hopefully the managers can make some sort of changes to cause this match to open up a bit, as it's been a cagey affair.

Colombia and Peru have no major surprises in their lineup for their 2011 Copa America quarterfinal, with the likes of Radamel Falcao and Fredy Guarin making the start again for Los Cafeteros. Their combinations will be key for their team tonight. Cristian Zapata continues to sit on the bench with a slight injury. They have some serious firepower off the bench, with Hugo Rodallega and Jackson Martinez ready to aid in the attack up top at any time. Peru's lineup is lacking in big names, but they've made up for that with effort in previous matches. Here are the lineups.
Colombia lineup: Martinez; Yepes, Perea, Armero, Zuiñiga; Aguilar, D. Moreno, Guarin, C. Moreno, Ramos, Falcao
Peru lineup: Libman; Acasiete, Revoredo, Ramos, Vilchez, Balbin, Guevara, Gonzalez, Corzo, Chiroque, Rudiaz
Kickoff of the match is at 3:00 P.M. ET and the match can be seen on Univision and Youtube in the United States. Stick with this StoryStream for updates throughout the match. We will also have coverage of the later Argentina vs. Uruguay match.
The opening two rounds of the 2011 Copa America group stages were unpredictable, but not in a good way. Usually unpredictable tournaments are fun and feature lots of action, but Copa, through the first two rounds, was simply disappointing. All of the tournament's best teams didn't play up to their best, and they weren't beaten by teams who played beautiful football. The likes of Uruguay, Brazil, and Argentina let other teams get points more than they were outplayed. One of the beneficiaries of this was Peru, who took four points from their first two matches.
In round three of the group stages, some order returned to the tournament. Brazil and Argentina finally won, and both did it in style. Uruguay won as well. Paraguay drew, but at least they drew because of a brilliant comeback in a thrilling match. Peru? They finally lost, as they were expected to do against Uruguay in the first game. Will order continue to be restored to the tournament in the quarterfinals?
If it is, Peru don't have much of a chance against Colombia, the winners of Group A. With Jefferson Farfan and Claudio Pizarro in the lineup it would be another story, but their current roster faces a massive talent gap. Of course, their current roster faced a massive talent gap against Uruguay, who they drew, and Chile, who beat them in the 92nd minute, but they held their own in those games.
In a must-win situation, though, don't expect Colombia to give them the leeway that Uruguay and Chile did. Colombia might be the biggest underachievers in world football, but it would be a serious disaster if they found a way to give this game away. Their back four, playmaker Fredy Guarin, and striker Radamel Falcao are just too good to not win this game.
Group stages filled with upsets, followed by the favorites showing up in the quarterfinals is something that happens frequently in Copa America. This match should be no exception.
