Copa America 2011 Quarterfinals, Colombia Vs. Peru: Final, Peru Downs Colombia In Upset Win

Peru, who has not qualified for a World Cup since 1982 is into their first Copa America semifinal since 1997. Not on the back of some great performances by Jefferson Farfan - he's injured. Claudio Pizarro? Him too. The hero? Substitute Carlos Lobaton, a 31-year-old attacking midfielder for Sporting Cristal. They haven't won the league in Peru since 2005 and they haven't competed in Copa Libertadores since 2009. He scored the game winner in extra time as Peru won by a final score of 2-0.

Fiorentina star and Peru's captain, Juan Manuel Vargas scored the second goal, restoring the game's outcome to something that has some basis in reality. Both goals were partially assisted by errors by Colombia goalkeeper Neco Martinez, who had a terrible game. The first goal came after a dropped cross by Martinez, and he was out of position on the second.

Peru now await the winner of the Argentina vs. Uruguay match, which kicks off at 6:15 PM E.T. For all of our Copa America coverage, check out our 2011 Copa America section.
