Start Of Turkish Soccer Season Delayed By More Than A Month

Turkish football season was due to kick off in less than two weeks, but it's now been delayed until at least September 9, when the Super Lig is now set to start, with the Bank Asaya league beginning the next day. News of the announcement came just hours after the president of the national federation, Mehmet Aydinlar, met with the prosecutor in charge of the Turkish match-fixing scandal, alleged to include 19 matches.

The investigation has led to the incarceration of 30 individuals, including Aziz Yildirim, president of last year's champions, Fenerbahce. The Yellow Canaries performed underwhelmingly in the first half of the season, then went on to win 16 out of 17 of their last matches to claim their 18th title. One would think that those in charge of fixing matches would like to do it a little more subtly.

Despite postponement of the start of the season, Fenerbahce, as well as second-place club Trabzonspor, who have also seen officials jailed, have not been disciplined by the TFF, and will be allowed to compete in Champions League play.

For much more detailed information, listen to Turkish Football Weekly, who have been discussing the scandal almost weekly.
