FIFA Women's World Cup 2011: England, Mexico Both Net Goals

Stay connected with SB Nation

Mexico has scored to take a lead against New Zealand, but it didn't take long for the potential effect of that goal to be completely negated. With a win, an England loss, and some made up ground Mexico could advance to the quarterfinals of the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup, but a goal by Ellen White has all but mathematically quashed the hopes of El Tri.

in the 15th minute of the match between England and Japan, Karen Carney played White through on goal with a long ball. The Japanese keeper came out too far, too early and White recognized the situation hitting a fantastic chip towards the goal from 20 yards out. The keeper reacted well and almost got back to make the save, but White's chip was absolutely perfect, and England are up 1-0 in the first half.

As it stands, England would win the group on seven points, Japan would go through to the quarterfinals on six points, and Mexico would be eliminated on four points.
