Through 45 minutes of the final Group B games in the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup, Mexico is doing exactly what they were going to need to do to have a chance to make the knockout stages, as they lead New Zealand by a score of 2-0 at halftime. However, thinks are not going their way in the other game, as England are outplaying Japan, and they have a 1-0 lead to show for it. For Mexico to have any chance to advance, they will need to score a couple more times and hope Japan win. It's not impossible, but it looks unlikely.
England took the lead in the 15th minute, thanks to an absolutely stunning chipped shot by Ellen White, who has been brilliant for the Three Lionesses. She almost scored another close to the end of the half with a fairly similar shot, but goalkeeper Ayumi Kaihori made a brilliant save.
Mexico's two goals came from 19-year-old striker Stephany Mayor and veteran star Maribel Dominguez. They look like they can score more, but it doesn't matter if Japan can't do the same. Right now, not only are England not going home, they're going to win the group if the current results stand.
