Chivas takes on Monterrey in this weekend's marquee fixture

Chivas vs. Monterrey is by far the highlight of this week's Mexican Primera action

This week's slate of Mexican Primera action is a solid one, but there's one game that rises above them all in importance. Chivas Guadalajara and Monterrey look like two of the division's favorites early on, and they face off this Saturday.

Cruz Azul vs. Club Tijuana

Saturday, 6:00 pm ET

Tijuana are a team with plenty of talent, but they're still struggling to find their footing in the Primera. After an impressive home win against Santos Laguna, they followed it up with a disappointing home draw against Puebla last week. Cruz Azul are in a similar situation, having done well to beat Atlante two weeks ago but disappointing in a draw against Jaguares de Chiapas last week. The good news for Cruz Azul is that, win or lose, they get 'Chaco' Christian Gimenez and Jose de Jesus Corona back next week.

Chivas Guadalajara vs. Monterrey

Saturday, 8:00 pm ET

UNAM Pumas are top of the table at the moment, but just below them are a couple of virtual Liguilla locks in Chivas Guadalajara and Monterrey. Both teams have been weakened slightly by international call-ups and injuries in the opening weeks, but it hasn't affected either team too badly.

While the teams are very similar in talent, Chivas might have a bit of an advantage in fitness and momentum. Monterrey won 5-0 against Herediano in mid-week, but having to play on Wednesday could end up being a negative. Additionally, they lost last week to San Luis. Meanwhile, Chivas pulled off an impressive win over Monarcas Morelia and have yet to lose in the Primera.

'Cubo' Erick Torres should return to the Chivas bench after Mexico were eliminated from the U-20s on Wednesday, while there are still fitness questions about Monterrey strikers Humberto Suazo and Aldo de Nigris. All the signs point to Chivas having the upper hand in this marquee matchup, but predictions based on reason and logic are more or less worthless in the Mexican Primera.
