In a bizarre incident in Torreon, Mexico, the Mexican Primera Division match between Santos Laguna and Monarcas Morelia at the Estadio Corona was abandoned after gunshots were heard in the vicinity of the stadium. We've now learned that the gunman was never actually inside of the stadium and that the stadium was well secured, but that doesn't mean that the incident didn't make for a seriously scary moment. Here's video, captured from the Telefutura feed of the match.
The match was abandoned immediately as authorities inside the stadium did not know the origin of the gunfire and if both the players and crowd could be kept safe. Thankfully, the incident did not occur inside the stadium, though a police officer was injured in the shooting outside of the stadium.
After it was confirmed that the stadium was safe, Santos club president Alejandro Iraragorri and goalkeeper Oswaldo Sanchez apologized to Monarcas Morelia and all of the supporters in the stadium for the incident. However, despite the fact that the origin of the gunfire was discovered and the stadium was confirmed to be secure, the match was abandoned.
