Alberto Aquilani Rumored To Be Joining AC Milan

Reports out of Italy suggest that Alberto Aquilani is set to join AC Milan on loan, with £5m to be paid to Liverpool in June 2012 to outright purchase the player. The Italian international spent last season on loan to Juventus, and many believed he'd be bought by the Turin club. But instead Juve picked up Andrea Pirlo from Milan, meaning they didn't have as much of a need for Aquilani, and so it makes perfect sense for the rossoneri  to go ahead and make an almost-swap for him in return. Liverpool complicates things a bit, but it's well-known that Aquilani has no place in an already overcrowded Red attack, and it was almost certain he'd return to Italy.

Should these reports turn out to be true (I use ITSOTP, or In The Shirt On The Pitch, as a measure of whether the player has truly joined the club, and clearly this hasn't happened yet) it's unlikely Aquilani will have a starting role at Milan, although he probably won't spend every match on the bench. He makes a more than adequate fill-in for the aging Clarence Seedorf, or he can slot in for Kevin-Prince Boateng when the situation calls for more creativity. For a club looking to make a deeper run in the Champions League this season, picking up Aquilani, especially at this price, is a wise move.
