For Arsenal fans hoping that their team will sign an experienced, international-quality central defender, today is your lucky day. Regardless of what you think of German international Per Mertesacker, he certainly fits the basic criteria for what Arsenal need to add to their squad and the Gunners are in negotiations with Werder Bremen for a transfer, according to the BBC and numerous other sources.
The 26-year-old Mertesacker is the captain of Werder Bremen and has previously expressed his desire to stay. The 6'6" giant of a defender has been capped 75 times for Germany and has been called into Joachim Löw's squad for Germany's upcoming Euro 2012 qualifiers.
Mertesacker is sure to be one of a dozen or so players linked to Arsenal in the coming days, as they look to replenish their depleted squad.
