Based on his playing time over the last couple of years, the writing has been on the wall regarding the potential departure of Fernando Gago from Real Madrid. When Los Merengues signed Nuri Sahin from Borussia Dortmund in the offseason, it became abundantly clear that there was no place in the team for Gago. He's been linked to various English Premier League teams since then, but it appears that he's going to AS Roma on loan instead.
Based on the age of their players who can play a defensive midfield position and distribute from deep, Gago would be a good addition for Roma. Simone Perrotta and Fabio Simplicio are solid players, but both are on the wrong side of 30 and it seems unreasonable to depend on either of them to stay healthy and start every match over the course of the season. Luis Enrique has made a number of big moves this summer at Roma, and Gago would be another fantastic addition for the Giallorossi.
