It looks like good news for Arsenal's defence. The Gunner were in some need of a hulking centre half, and, well, now they've all but got one, with Werder Bremen confirming that an agreement has been reached with the Premier League club for their captain:
Werder Bremen's general manager Klaus Allofs confirmed that the club has reached an agreement about the Mertesacker transfer with Arsenal.
At six foot six inches, Martesacker stands at three Andrei Arshavins tall and will add a much-needed physical presence to what has recently been a worryingly frail Arsenal back line team. It's unclear just how much he's been bought for or what sort of wages Arsenal will be paying the German international, but considering the club is swimming in money and desperately needed defensive help, this is probably a pretty good buy.
