U.S. Soccer has announced the squad for the August 10 friendly between the USA and Mexico, and there are some interesting surprises in Jurgen Klinsmann's first USMNT roster. Here's the entire 22-man squad.
Defenders (8): Carlos Bocanegra (Saint-Etienne), Edgar Castillo (Club America) , Clarence Goodson (Brondby), Heath Pearce (Chivas USA), Timothy Chandler (Nuremburg), Steve Cherundolo (Hannover 96), Michael Orozco Fiscal (San Luis), Tim Ream (New York Red Bulls)
Midfielders (8): Michael Bradley (Borussia Mönchengladbach), Jermaine Jones (Schalke 04), Jose Fransisco Torres (Pachuca), Maurice Edu (Rangers), Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), Brek Shea (FC Dallas), Ricardo Clark (Eintracht Frankfurt), DeMarcus Beasley (Puebla)
A couple of players who are first team locks have not been called in, likely because their teams or the players themselves requested not to be in this team. Clint Dempsey, who will be starting a new Premier League season and Europa League campaign, along with Jozy Altidore, who is settling in with AZ Alkmaar, were not called up. Oguchi Onyewu was also omitted, but that could be a choice based on form or letting him settle into his new club, Sporting Lisbon. The same goes for Jonathan Spector, his form and his move to Birmingham City.
