The 2010 World Cup was only a year ago, but the countdown to the 2014 World Cup is on. In just 1,000 days from today, on June 12, 2014, the 2014 World Cup will kick off in Brazil with all of the world watching, beginning the world's biggest sporting event. Of course, with the world's biggest sporting event comes nauseating hyperbole and often boring, cynical play, but we'll ignore that for now. Beauty, beaches, pageantry, other nice words!
Qualifying for the tournament is underway as the field gets pared down to 32. Only 31 of those spots are up for grabs because Brazil gets an automatic spot in the tournament as hosts, but we're working our way through teams to that glorious mont in the summer of 2014 and it's hard not to be excited. Even if you're disappointed by the play, there's Rio de Janeiro and it's lovely beaches (as well as the lovely looking people) to look forward to.
So count it down. The stadiums aren't done, the teams aren't qualified and there's plenty to be argued about (the ball!) before the tournament gets underway, but get to counting and start at 1,000.
